NEWS AND UPDATES

The final days of the Cross Keys Inn, in August 2009.

Although the Cross Keys had been associated with the opening celebrations of the Prince of Wales Tunnel. it was not Shildon’s oldest Inn. The Grey Horse Inn, once owned by Dan Adamson, is the oldest, but not in its present form or lay-out.

The Grey Horse Inn has been added to during its two centuries of existance, and began as a small ale house providing refreshment for travellers and cattle drivers passing through the village.
Shildon Hall, once home to Mr Metcalfe whose charity provided schooling in the town in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, stood on what is now Main Street, very near to the junction with Central Parade. An early drawing had come into my possession, which I hope to copy and publish on this page in the near future.
