my late mother and her brother Arnold Spensley were both born at 67 Church St now the Hospice shop. Their father and Arnold were hairdressers and they lived above the shop. We lived in West Auckland but have great childhood memories of visiting my grandparents at the barbers. We were in the scouts. Can see them watching the Durham Miners Gala participants dancing up Church St on their return and full of festive cheer. Visiting Shildon Show in the Rec.in the rain.Heighington and Darlington Shows also.Sadly I do not have many visits back to Shildon but it will always have a special place in me-so much for us who live away!

I was born in Bishop Auckland, but lived in Shildon with my Dad and Mum (Harry and Val Lakeland) until I was 2. We left in 1963 to live in Inverness in Scotland. My grandparents were Herbert and Beatrice Lakeland and they lived in 32 St John’s Road, Shildon. Does anyone remember any of my family? My Grandma’s maiden name was Hall.

Hi, I’m researching my family history and my mother, grandparents and great grandparents all lived in Shildon at one time. My grandparents were Emily and Frederick Blake and my g.grandparents Charlotte and Richard Taylorson. They had 11 children, so I have plenty of research still to do. If these names ring any bells, please get in touch. I hope to visit Shildon in 2005 to check out some of the places I’ve traced. Cheryl

my mam and grandparents were all from Shildon. they lived at 11 Simpson street and were called Stott. I spent nearly all my school holidays in Shildon, and although I have always lived in Leeds I still miss Shildon very much. I only have one relation still living there, my mams sister Christine.

I lived in Shildon up until 1976. Was great to be in a class that contributed and took part in the 1975 S&DR Railway Celebrations.Great memories of the town and the people. Still come down regularly to watch the Football team play. Hopefully this will be another brilliant site which promotes everything Shildon, like does the Forum, which already does a first class job

Great to see new website…all the best with it. Looking forward to seeing more old photos online! My family were from Shildon from the 1870’s onward, mainly names Sedgwick, Latcham and Horner…the latter family lived at Soho Cottage from 1925 which is now the Timothy Hackworth Museum!!

What memories, found Shildon site in web search. The photos of Adelaide Street-my “grandmother” had a fish and chip shop in that street, HARLANDS,shop was about halfway up the street. My paternal grandfather had a nwspaper shop in Alma Road, where my mother and her siblings lived. Grandfather was John Thomas Walker, mother was Dorothy Walker, who married Jack (John)Thompson, who after the was had a building business, Richardson and Thompson. A previous visitor mentions Arnold Spensley, had many a haircut there, and there is a comment from a lady with father Harry lakeland. I believe he was a friend of my brother Frank Thompson and I when we lived at 8, mafeking Place.

Great to see the old photos! I couldn’t believe it when I saw the two streets !My gggrandmother died on Adelaide Street and was nursed by a woman who lived in Alma Road. Seeing the photos of the actual places where my ancestors lived really means a lot. Was there a hospital or similar on Adelaide Street as she lived in Mechanics Street? Are there any more photos of streets long gone? My gggrandfather was an engine fitter and worked from the 1850s until the 1890s.
Great to read all the historic notes.

Hi Sally, sorry for the delay in repying. There was no hospital in New Shildon but in those days neighbours helped each other even in midwifery. All of those old streets disapeared under the bulldozer in the 1970’s and 80’s but many still remember their neighbours and the community spirit.
More photographs are to be added to the site in April Sally.

My name is Jonathan Travis Hackworth from Danville, VA; USA. I’m doing some research on my family line. I’ve traced my line back to 1634, Richard Hackworth, who came to America from England and settled in what was then Liberty, VA; now Beford, VA.
My research indicated that the Hackworth line came out of South Wales and that there was a “Hackworth Castle” or a fairly large home place in thae area of South Wales.
Does anyone know anything about such a place? Any help is appreciated. If interested in the Hackworth’s from the time they came to America I can provide that information.
The Hackworth’s in America are decended from a George Hackworth who had 7 sons, 5 of whom fought in the American Revolution. Most of the Hackworth’s come from those five brothers. I come from Thomas Hackworth Sr. 1763 – 1865. There is also a Thomas Hackworth listed as a passenger on the British ship CHRISTIAN – March 16, 1634
John Hackworth came from England to VA as bondsman Sept. 23, 1636
