My name is Jonathan Travis Hackworth from Danville, VA; USA. I'm doing some research on my family line. I've traced my line back to 1634, Richard Hackworth, who came to America from England and settled in what was then Liberty, VA; now Beford, VA.

My research indicated that the Hackworth line came out of South Wales and that there was a "Hackworth Castle" or a fairly large home place in thae area of South Wales.

Does anyone know anything about such a place? Any help is appreciated. If interested in the Hackworth's from the time they came to America I can provide that information.

The Hackworth's in America are decended from a George Hackworth who had 7 sons, 5 of whom fought in the American Revolution. Most of the Hackworth's come from those five brothers. I come from Thomas Hackworth Sr. 1763 - 1865. There is also a Thomas Hackworth listed as a passenger on the British ship CHRISTIAN - March 16, 1634

John Hackworth came from England to VA as bondsman Sept. 23, 1636

Hi Sally, sorry for the delay in repying. There was no hospital in New Shildon but in those days neighbours helped each other even in midwifery. All of those old streets disapeared under the bulldozer in the 1970’s and 80’s but many still remember their neighbours and the community spirit.
More photographs are to be added to the site in April Sally.

Thanks to the many people who leave comments on the site and to those who contact me directly at alan.ellwood@whsmithnet.co.uk with information and photographs.
Lately we have had contributions from Alan Thompson and from Craig Allison, both of whom passed on valuable documents and family histories to copy.

Please keep the contacts coming, and any documents or photos will be returned promptly and without damage.

Thanks again everyone, Best regards, Alan Ellwood - Shildon History Recall Society.

My mother came from Shildon and I was born there October 1944. Having left Britain in 1961 for distant shores, we eventually lost touch with family. Recently I've started compiling a family tree for my daughters and grandchildren and research has led me to believe that my great-grandparents moved to Shildon from St Just in Cornwall, possibly c1875-1880. I've just stumbled upon your web site today (having 'Googled' Shildon) and find it most interesting, giving some insight to life in Shildon in the 1800s. I had realised that my great-grandparents must have moved such a distance from 'home' in Cornwall in order to find work, but hadn't realised how great the influx of workers was. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Great to see the old photos! I couldn't believe it when I saw the two streets !My gggrandmother died on Adelaide Street and was nursed by a woman who lived in Alma Road. Seeing the photos of the actual places where my ancestors lived really means a lot. Was there a hospital or similar on Adelaide Street as she lived in Mechanics Street? Are there any more photos of streets long gone? My gggrandfather was an engine fitter and worked from the 1850s until the 1890s.
Great to read all the historic notes.

Re Alma Road photograph. My paternal Grandfather had a newspaper shop in Alma Road, looking at the photo, on the left side, just below the parked cars. His name was John Thomas WALKER, with daughters Annie, Emily, Kate and Dorothy and son Jack.
My mother was Dorothy, who married Jack (John) Thompson
Re Adelaide Street photo: A lady who I knew as "Grandmother" Mrs Harland, I cannot recall her christian name had a Fish and Chip shop in Adelaide Street.Looking at the photo, the shop was on the left side of the street, about half way up. I recall there was an archway which led into the back yard of the premises.
If helpful, I have family photos of the shops, and I am prpeared to send them to you if you provide an address.

What memories, found Shildon site in web search. The photos of Adelaide Street-my "grandmother" had a fish and chip shop in that street, HARLANDS,shop was about halfway up the street. My paternal grandfather had a nwspaper shop in Alma Road, where my mother and her siblings lived. Grandfather was John Thomas Walker, mother was Dorothy Walker, who married Jack (John)Thompson, who after the was had a building business, Richardson and Thompson. A previous visitor mentions Arnold Spensley, had many a haircut there, and there is a comment from a lady with father Harry lakeland. I believe he was a friend of my brother Frank Thompson and I when we lived at 8, mafeking Place.
